21 March 2014

SECTION27 joins the Yende family, the Treatment Action Campaign, and other friends of Mduduzi Yende in mourning the loss of our comrade, who passed away tragically at 8pm on 19 March 2014 after being involved in a car accident. Comrade Mdu joined the TAC in 2008. He started working as a Community Health Advocate (CHA) in 2010. Mduduzi was instrumental in promoting male medical circumcision (MMC) and HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) among men in the province. In 2011 he became a community mobiliser in the Mpumalanga province, before becoming a branch mentor. He rose through the ranks to become the TAC provincial coordinator for Mpumalanga at the time of his death. He was travelling from Nelspruit to Johannesburg after taking part in the launch of the TAC’s health manifesto to political parties.

Comrade Mdu will be sorely missed for his hard work and dedication in helping to de-stigmatise the HIV/AIDS epidemic and ensuring access to treatment for everyone. It is through the efforts of selfless individuals such as Mduduzi that future generations in South African will enjoy the human rights guaranteed in the Constitution.

Mduduzi will be laid to rest on 22 March 2014 in Belgrade, KwaZulu-Natal. He is survived by three children, his life partner and his mother. Lala ngokuthula comrade Mdu!
