Sasha Stevenson

Executive Director

Sasha is a human rights lawyer and the Executive Director of SECTION27. She joined SECTION27 on 1 October 2012.

Sasha has been working for over a decade to secure health system change that realises rights. She has represented bereaved families in the Life Esidimeni arbitration and inquest following the deaths of 144 mental health care users, and the applicants in litigation to re-start the school feeding programme to mitigate child hunger during the COVID-19 lockdown. Her work also includes litigation and advocacy on migrant health, access to abortion and access to medicine, among others.

Before joining SECTION27, Sasha worked at Bowmans, as a Law Clerk to former Chief Justice Pius Langa at the Constitutional Court of South Africa, and for the Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Sasha holds bachelors, honours and law degrees from Rhodes University and an LLM from the University of Cambridge.
