Celebrating #30YearsOfSocialJustice, SECTION27 and Casac South Africa released a report today, titled:
‘Democracy & Constitutionalism: Civic Education Conference Report & Keywords’ .
The report highlights the outcomes of the civic education conference, where youth leaders, civil society groups, and social movements from South Africa and beyond gathered to discuss constitutionalism, the rule of law, and democracy.
The participants highlighted the importance of focusing on specific areas to drive South Africa’s developmental democracy forward, while also gaining valuable insights from diverse perspectives. Additionally, it aimed to ignite grassroots activism and foster civic education on #democracy and #constitutionalism.

Day 29: #30Yearsin30Days
SECTION27 received a complaint about pregnant learners who were unfairly expelled from a school in KZN. A pregnant learner who had provisional acceptance at a University was barred from writing her matric exam until SECTION27 intervened.
The Department of Basic Education in KwaZulu-Natal allowed the learner to write and also committed to withdrawing the school’s pregnancy policy with immediate effect. Speaking to the Sunday Times, SECTION27’s Head of Education Rights Programme, Faranaaz Veriava, said, “the best interest of the girl learners have been prioritised.” She added that the department’s pregnancy policy and constitution were discriminatory to expel a female pupil for being pregnant
