Eastern Cape Health Crisis

Eastern Cape Health Crisis Action Coalition

The Eastern Cape Health Crisis Action Coalition (the ECHCAC or the Coalition) was formed in June 2013 by a group of organisations and individuals that are deeply concerned by the deepening crisis in health care in the Eastern Cape and its results, including increased morbidity, death and the violation of a range of Constitutional rights and duties.

We note weakness in the following key areas of health care in the Eastern Cape: Facilities, the availability of medication and supplies/supply chain management, Human Resources, Management, Patient Transport and Emergency Medical Services, Equipment, Staff accommodation, Rehabilitation, home based care and preventative services, Budgeting and expenditure.

The Coalition Partners formed the Coalition to campaign and, if necessary, use the courts to fulfil its mandate.
