29 MAY 2014,
JOHANNESBURG – The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), SECTION27, Sonke Gender Justice and Awethu stand in solidarity with the striking mineworkers on the platinum belt in Marikana. Each of the organisations have made collections of clothing, money and food supplies amongst their staff and supporters to support the miners and their families, and will continue to do so going forward.
After four months the mineworkers are in desperate need of provisions and funds as they are not receiving salaries. There have been reports of malnutrition and hunger as the longest strike in South African history continues. On Friday morning a delegation of leaders from the TAC and SECTION27 will be meeting with the mineworkers in Marikana and will deliver the food, clothing and donations to them. We encourage other organisations to stand in solidarity and support the strike.
