SECTION27 is a well-established and widely respected public interest law centre that seeks to achieve substantive equality and social justice in South Africa. Guided by the principles and values in the Constitution, SECTION27 uses law in advocacy, legal literacy, research, community mobilisation and precedent-setting litigation to achieve access to healthcare services and basic education, build important jurisprudence and strengthen government accountability.

SECTION27 is committed to skills development and skills upliftment within the public interest sector. The organisation has an internship program that is aimed at creating opportunities for motivated students and recent graduates to obtain practical work experience which will complement their studies and/or improve their competence and future employability.

This opportunity is extended to new law graduates from (or having studied in) Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga or KwaZulu Natal. The intern will be based in Johannesburg.

  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Proficiency in one or more indigenous South African languages is highly desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in litigation, field work, research, and advocacy campaigns for various cases.
  • Assist with monitoring compliance where required.
  • Conduct research memoranda on at least three cases.
  • Participate in supervised consultations with clients.
  • Draft simple client affidavits and incorporate research into court papers for review by an attorney.
  • Draft minutes of meetings held with government officials.
  • Write letters on behalf of clients of the SECTION27 advice office, following consultation with clients.
  • Write Op-eds on at least three cases.
  • Take notes from consultations with clients.
  • Produce at least three campaign materials.

General

  • Attend specific team meetings, monthly staff meetings as well as other meetings that relate to the work of SECTION27.
  • Submit monthly timesheets.
