The right to food is guaranteed in several international and regional instruments and in South Africa’s domestic law. Whilst South African jurisprudence on the right to food is limited, the legal protection of the right has become increasingly significant as food insecurity worsens. South African children face a triple burden of malnutrition, in the form of undernutrition and hunger, micronutrient deficiencies, and obesity.
