Day 22: #30Yearsin30Days

A webinar hosted by SECTION27 and Blind SA in partnership with the Daily Maverick.

We discussed how a recent Constitutional Court ruling improved access to materials for blind or visually impaired persons.

SECTION27 and Blind SA call on South Africa to #RatifytheMarrakeshTreaty to improve access to reading materials for the blind and visually impaired.

The Treaty enables people in South Africa to engage in cross-border exchange, while also granting access to online libraries and international consortiums, which guarantees immediate access to a vast array of titles in accessible formats.

Day 25: #30Yearsin30Days

A walk down memory lane: Young Michael Komape lost his life in 2014 after he drowned in a pit toilet at his school in Limpopo. SECTION27 has been representing the family of Michael Komape since 2015 following their son’s death.

In 2019, the Komape family was awarded damages for his death by the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein. This follows an appeal by SECTION27 against the Department of Education in Limpopo on behalf of the family.

As part of our campaign to eradicate pit toilets in Limpopo, SECTION27 in partnership with the Centre for Child Law, launched an online tool to track progress made by the Limpopo Department of Education (LDoE). The tool is called The Michael Komape Sanitation Progress Monitor. Anyone can search for a school in Limpopo in the tool to verify if information provided by the LDOE is correct.

The tool was launched at the Human Rights Festival held at the Constitution Hill on 24 March 2023.
