ON 24 November 2017, SECTION27 will host a dialogue on gender-based violence (GBV) discussing the failings of different systems. The dialogue will focus in particular on the criminal justice system, in response to GBV. The event will take place at SECTION27, 1st Floor South Point Corner, 87 De Korte Street, Braamfontein, between 14:30 for 15:00 – 17:00.
Sharon Ekambaram (Manager: Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme at Lawyers for Human Rights) will facilitate a discussion between:
The Sexual Offences and Community Affairs Unit of the National
Prosecuting Authority;
The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of Police; and
GBV activists
We will also release an online publication which includes a series of opinion pieces that highlight the failings of different systems in their response to GBV. SECTION27 published these pieces between July and August 2017 in the Daily Maverick. The publication will include a foreword by Kwezilomso Mbandazayo, the Women’s Rights and Gender Justice Programme Manager at OXFAM South Africa.
