Executive Director, Umunyana Rugege is attending the Oxfam South Africa (OZA) official press briefing that will unpack Oxfam International’s (OI) Inequality Report, with special focus on South Africa. The report is set to launch at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, on Tuesday 22 January 2019.

Head of Health, Sasha Stevenson will be on a panel at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Studies at a colloquium on human dignity. She will be speaking about the right to access quality healthcare in the session on the struggle for basic needs and rights in South Africa.

Budget Analyst Daniel Mclaren will be at a Secretariat Meeting of Imali Yethu and will also be participating in meetings with the Budget Justice Coalition, looking ahead to the February 2019 budget speech, due on 21 February.

Sasha Stevenson and Ektaa Deochand will meet with the Office of Health Standards Compliance to discuss norms and standards for Emergency Medical Services.

Daniel McLaren and Ngqabutho Mpofu will meet with a team from Corruption Watch to discuss a new multi-stakeholder project designed to increase transparency and efficiency in health procurement and contracting.

SECTION27 issued a statement voicing deep concern and unease about a campaign launched by the Democratic Alliance (DA) this week and more specifically about a billboard which, among others refers to the Life Esidimeni and Michael Komape tragedies. Read the full statement here.

Congratulations to Vuyisile Malinga, a researcher in the Education Team, for being offered a place at Norton Rose to complete his articles in 2020. Vuyisile joined the SECTION27 team in 2018 as an intern and has made an outstanding contribution to our work in Limpopo. His piece on infrastructure issues at Makangwane High School in Limpopo was first published in the Daily Maverick and subsequently published in the Oxford Human Rights Hub Blog.

SECTION27 welcomes Motheo Brodie to the Education Team as an intern. Motheo is a huge fan of music, theatre and sport. As a sport enthusiast and a supporter of Arsenal, he enjoys hiking, socialising and a good adventure.
