LIFE ESIDIMENI INQUEST ONCE AGAIN ADJOURNED UNTIL 2 AUGUST 2021
Judge Mmonoa Teffo of the Pretoria High Court has postponed proceedings of the Life Esidimeni Inquest until 2 August 2021, following concerns that newly appointed legal counsel for potentially implicated people in the Inquest have not had adequate time to prepare.
“Parties who have just obtained legal representation should be afforded the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the proceedings and consult with their legal representatives,” Judge Teffo stated.
This comes as the second adjournment of proceedings due to government officials and other potentially implicated parties not having adequate legal representation.
Setbacks to the process of the Inquest delay the justice process. This delay, while now unavoidable, is frustrating because all parties were warned of the Inquest and the option to secure legal counsel. Nonetheless, SECTION27 hopes that this week’s postponement will allow parties to prepare so that future delays can be avoided, and that the Inquest can do its work effectively, efficiently and thoroughly.
