SECTION27 is shocked and saddened to learn of the reported murder of the Eswatini human rights lawyer, Mr Thulani Maseko.

In February 2022, Thulani Maseko was a panellist at a conference organised by SECTION27 & CASAC on ‘Democracy and Constitutionalism together with other democracy and human rights advocates from across South Africa, Africa, India, Brazil and the US.

In his opening remarks, Thulani Maseko quoted Mandela saying that “constitutionalism means that no office and no institution should be higher than the law”. He decried the Swati monarchy which is at odds with the notion of constitutionalism, and which is lethally repressive of peaceful civic engagement.

Thulani Maseko’s closing remark to the conference was a rallying call to the SADC region to intervene against the repressive monarchy and to help chart a way to a truly democratic state which respects human rights and social justice.  Let this be his legacy.

We send our deepest condolences and solidarity to Thulani Maseko’s family, friends, colleagues and comrades. May his soul rest in peace.
