Monday 22 Aug: Catch Silomo Khumalo, legal researcher at SECTION27 on SABC Morning Live, when he discusses our report “Too many children left in the dark: Exclusion in the South African inclusive education system” The report documents widespread violations of the rights of children with disabilities in the Umkhanyakude District. The children’s realities, described in detail in this report, exact a heavy price on poor, black children with disabilities in the Umkhanyakude District in KwaZulu-Natal province, and amount to systemic violations of their constitutional rights to basic education, equality and dignity.

SECTION27 Mpumalanga Field Researcher Sifiso Nkala is hosting a National Health Insurance (NHI) workshop in Nkangala district. The workshop aims to educate community members about NHI and to give them space to interrogate what the policy means for their community.

SECTION27 Executive Director Mark Heywood is giving a talk at the International Federation for Human Rights forum titled “Challenging unequal economic structures in South Africa”.

Tuesday 23 Aug: Students for Law and Social Justice Fellow Tina Power and SECTION27 Researcher Tim Fish are attending the Southern African Developing Countries Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSLT ) workshop. The workshop will discuss the inclusion of human rights in the CSTL programme in South Africa.

SECTION27’s health and advocacy team and the Treatment Action Campaign will hold a post mortem on the recent International AIDS Conference and plot the way forward.

Thursday 25 Aug: SECTION27 National Strategic Plan Advocacy Officer Vuyokazi Gonyela is attending a meeting with the Limpopo Provincial Council on Aids (PCA) secretariat and the NSP Provincial coordinator to provide support in developing a three month NSP advocacy training plan.

Friday 26 Aug: SECTION27 NSP Advocacy officer Vuyokazi Gonyela is giving a presentation on NSP advocacy, focusing on issues around HIV transmission in Tzaneen, Limpopo. This will be followed by the distribution of our latest Spotlight NSP publication.
