SECTION27 receives Shuttleworth Foundation Flash Grant

SECTION27 is proud to announce its receipt of a Shuttleworth Foundation Flash Grant to the value of $5 000, which was awarded to Dr Demichelle Petherbridge, an attorney at SECTION27 working in the Education Rights Programme. This grant will allow SECTION27 to continue its work in challenging the Copyright Act and its detrimental impact on the rights of persons who are blind or visually-impaired. SECTION27 will also use the grant to advance its fight for the inclusion of exceptions into copyright law to ensure that persons with disabilities are able to access accessibly-formatted materials easily and help put an end to the devastating book famine that has left many persons who are blind or visually-impaired without access to books and educational materials. Greater access to accessibly formatted materials, such as Braille, will open up a world of knowledge for those who, for far too long, have been left in the dark and empower them to join as equal participants in society.

This grant will help SECTION27 break down the barriers to education, knowledge and power still blocking those who are blind and visually impaired, and we express our sincerest thanks to the Shuttleworth Foundation for this opportunity, and to Dr Andrew Rens for his nomination of Dr Petherbridge.
