SECTION27 is a non-profit organisation that uses public interest law and advocacy to protect, promote and advance human rights and social justice. Our activities include litigation, research, and advocacy to advance and promote the rule of law. We focus on protecting everyone’s right of access to health care services, basic education, and sufficient food, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

SECTION27 seeks to appoint a Communications and Campaigns Officer to conduct research, drive engaging and creative communications to achieve SECTION27’s objectives. The position is based in Johannesburg.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Education

  • Diploma or Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field is required

Experience

  • 4years+ experience in a communication and/or advocacy role within the fields of health rights and education rights.
  • Experience with integrated online and physical campaign methods
  • Demonstrable experience of communication strategy development
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Basic design skills to ensure products and materials look professional and are consistent in branding and style
  • Experience developing and implementing trainings and workshops for diverse groups.
  • Experience coordinating projects or campaigns with multiple partners.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of the public interest law sector.

Duties and Responsibilities

              Campaigns

  • Develop and implement programmatic communications and campaigns plans for S27 strategy
  • Lead on campaign to deliver high-performing, innovative and effective campaigns including online campaigns.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of campaign projects and tactics to achieve the goals and targets, in consultation with the heads of programmes and ensure alignment of programmatic activities.
  • Identify campaign audiences, develop tactics, and design effective calls to action to achieve campaign goals.
  • Draft press statements for campaigns and liaise with journalists
  • Contribute towards building the media database
  • Consistently collect and document the organisation’s activities (case studies, video, photos, etc.) for use by the communications team
  • Ensure brand visibility in all the S27 products and activities
  • Design and deliver robust communications and campaign plans to support S27 strategic plan
  • Develop monitoring and evaluation frameworks for campaigns in collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation team
  • Develop and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with partners to drive campaigns
  • Seeking innovative solutions to increase the organisation’s brand
  • Develop and share quality information and other communication materials
  • Support the development and implementation of communication strategies

Research

  • Conduct and/or coordinate research on health, education, climate and budget justice, both on request and proactively, to support litigation, advocacy and campaigns.
  • Undertake research as required to inform campaign activities
  • Translate research findings into and produce various outputs, such as policy briefs and working papers, as well as popular education materials including factsheets and pamphlets.
  • Work with community mobilisers to conduct training and rights education, public health and literacy workshops.
  • Form and strengthen relationships with partners and other stakeholders, convening roundtable discussions and other dialogues.

General

  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, team meetings, as well as other meetings that relate to the work of S27.
