About the Role
The Budget Justice Coalition (BJC) is a civil society coalition advocating for a people-centred budget that advances social and economic justice in South Africa.
We are looking for a Communications Intern to expand the Coalition’s communication and media advocacy, helping translate complex budget and policy issues into clear, engaging content that strengthens public understanding and participation.
The internship is for one year, and it offers hands-on experience in advocacy communication, digital storytelling, and campaign work within a network of leading social justice organisations.
This opportunity is best suited for someone who wants to build a career in communications for social impact, is curious about how policy, budgets, and public narratives intersect, and is motivated to find ways to contribute to real-world advocacy work.
This opportunity is extended to recent Communications graduates from (or having studied in) Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga or KwaZulu-Natal. In line with the Coalition’s commitment to inclusive activism and equitable representation, particular effort will be made prioritise applicants from underrepresented provinces, rural communities, and historically marginalised areas.
Objectives
- Strengthen and streamline the Coalition’s communication outputs
- Improve visibility, reach, and public engagement
- Build practical skills in advocacy communication for a young practitioner.
Duration
12 months (from 1 June 2026 to May 2027)
Education
A qualification in media, communications, visual arts
Language
Fluency (verbal and written) in English and at least one local language (e.g., isiZulu, Afrikaans, Sepedi) is a significant advantage
Duties and Responsibilities
Content & Digital Communication
- Assist in developing BJC’s social media
- Support content planning, scheduling, and audience engagement on social media channels
- Production of mailers
- Mailing database management.
Campaigns & Advocacy
- Support the implementation of advocacy campaigns (throughout the year)
- Contribute to making policy content accessible and engaging
- Assist in creating multimedia content for BJC’s events, protests, community mobilisation gatherings.
Media & Writing
- Assist in drafting media statements following budget announcements
- Support with media liaison
- Assist in website management (website updates and post uploads).
Coordination
- Participate in Communications Working Group meetings
- Collaborate with coalition members and partners.
Monitoring & Reporting
- Produce monthly reports on social media performance and database growth.
Learning and Support
As an intern with the BJC, the intern will gain:
- Weekly supervision and feedback from the Head of Communications
- Support from partner organisations
- Exposure to experienced practitioners across the Coalition
- Mentoring and psychosocial support
Skills & interests
- A qualification in media, communications, visual arts
- Volunteering experience in communication
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated passion for economic transformation and building an inclusive economy that works for all
- Ability to translate complex ideas into clear, accessible content
- Basic familiarity with social media platforms
- Strong organisation and attention to detail
- Willingness to learn and take initiative.
