Head of Communications, Nontsikelelo Mpulo will be attending the 7th Annual Disability Rights Conference organised by the University of Pretoria. The theme for this year’s conference is, “Fulfilling the right of persons with disabilities to live in the community: Promoting choice, inclusion and participation.” Delegates will discuss issues such as, the place of civil society, national human rights institutions and courts in promoting the right to live in the community amongst others.

SECTION27’s Regional Fellow, Zwelithini Matsoso will be in Nairobi, Kenya attending the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population Development (ICPD). Headlined, “Accelerating the Promise,” the 2019 ICPD Nairobi Summit seeks to advance the ICPD “Programme of Action” which was founded in the recognition that reproductive health, women’s empowerment and gender equality are the pathway to sustainable development.

Field researcher, Patrick Mdletshe will be attending a Provincial AIDS council meeting in Kwa-Zulu Natal. This meeting presents an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS in KZN. During this meeting, Patrick will be delivering a presentation on civil society intervention in response to HIV/AIDS in KZN.
Thursday 14
Patrick Mdletshe will be facilitating a sexual and reproductive health right session with uThukela district AIDS council at a workshop being held at the Department of Health, uThukela District Offices in Lady Smith, eMnambithi.
Attorney, Nkululeko Conco will be attending the Health Sector Anti-Corruption Forum Meeting on. The Forum has been established to address corruption in the health sector (both public and private). The Forum was officially launched on 1 October 2019 by President Cyril Ramaphosa and has, since it began its work in 2018, assisted the Special Investigating Unit with information to motivate for full scale investigations. We encourage the reporting of incidents of corruption to SECTION27, Corruption Watch or to the Special Investigating Unit.
SECTION27 will be attending the Knowledge Exchange Workshop: “Documentation of Human Rights Violations for Key & Vulnerable Populations in South Africa”. The Workshop will be hosted by Aids Foundation South Africa in Johannesburg.
Friday 15 November
Nkululeko Conco will be attending a meeting of the SANAC Human Rights Working Group. The Human Rights Working group will provide inputs into the development of a Human Rights Toolkit to be use by SANAC.

Spotlight on NHI: Questions raised over public hearings
The public hearings into government’s proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill had a rocky start in Mpumalanga recently as civil society organisations and some opposition parties slammed the process. Some raised questions over poor planning and possible hidden agendas. Others raised concerns that the hearings may be a missed opportunity to meaningfully bring the public into the conversation about the Bill that is meant to outline the funding of universal healthcare.
